Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader has said that the Chinese contractor will not be able to do any more work in Bangladesh after the death of five people due to the collapse of the bus rapid transit (BRT) project in the capital's Uttara. Earlier, the minister held a meeting with the top officials of various departments of the ministry.
He said this in response to questions from journalists at a press conference in the meeting room of the ministry on Sunday.
Obaidul Quader said in response to the question whether action has been taken after holding the contractor responsible in the investigation report, "When an accident occurs, the work is 79 percent complete." Considering the country's crisis, money, it will take a few years to call for a new tender. Since 20 percent work is left, let them finish it. But they will not be given any more work in Bangladesh.
On the afternoon of August 15, five members of a family were killed on the spot when a crane collapsed on a car while lifting a girder in Dhaka's Uttara. Two others in the car were injured. The ministry's investigation blamed Chinese contracting firm China Gazhuba Group Corporation.
Obaidul Quader said, "The focus of today's meeting was Gazipur." No other place in the country has this problem. I said in the meeting, Gazipur must be fixed at any cost. Only one project has been a thorn in our neck. It is Gazipur Bus Rapid Transit Project.
Obaidul Quader said that the program of safe roads is the most necessary, "It has become very important for us. No matter how much success we show, then I refrain from taking up projects that are now redundant, DAUs plans.'
Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader said that the government is very worried about the reserve, "We have some issues, we will face any danger with food, it is not likely." However, we have thought ahead. We are talking to people who come here about other things, about gas, about oil. Something positive can be found with the Sultan of Brunei. They also have proposals regarding oil and gas.
Obaidul Quader also said, 'We are very worried about the reserve. There is no reserve in Pakistan, there is no reserve in Sri Lanka, the situation in Nepal is bad, it is not going on.'
Referring to the global hunger index, Obaidul Quader said, 'I saw a strange index, we are seven losses down in the hunger index. But countries like India which are in the index, they are only above Afghanistan and below all. Now the crisis is fourfold. Still, India's reserves are high. What we have in reserve, we have a chance to run for five-six months with this reserve.
