The meeting was held on Wednesday at the Ministry of Planning of Agargaon in the capital. It was attended by ILO's SME expert Gunjan Dalakoti, Chief Technical Adviser Igor Bos, National Project Coordinator Annie Dong and others.
The Planning Minister said, 'Inflation rate has not increased due to the failure of our market. Our market is now deeply connected with the global market. The pressure of other markets is affecting us here in various ways. In response to the question whether getting a loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) would bring relief to the economy or not, the Planning Minister said, 'I have 100 rupees in my pocket, if someone gives another 10 rupees, it would be a little better. Similarly, there will be some temporary relief in IMF loans. He further said that the government is not uncomfortable, everyone goes to the market.
It is not a matter of one price today and another suddenly tomorrow. Even in the month of Kartika, household rice decreases, it is a regular process. What is in the pocket at the beginning of the month is not the same at the end of the month. At the end of the month there will be shortage in the pocket.
Bangladesh has started negotiations to get about 4.5 billion dollars from the IMF. As part of this, an IMF delegation visited Bangladesh last week. They have already held meetings with the Finance Ministry, Bangladesh Bank, Electricity Department, Commerce Ministry and National Board of Revenue (NBR).
Regarding the meeting with the ILO, the Planning Minister said that the ILO did not talk about the increase in wages like other labor organizations. They only talked about increasing the wages of tea workers and coastal fishermen. Recently the wages of tea workers have been increased. However, he feels that the increase in the wages of fishermen in coastal areas should be considered.
